This resource will be a winner over the Festive Season, I have used Mandalas and Geometry hand in hand with great success over the years. Experiment with shapes and mirrors and explore how a kaleidoscope actually works. I have included some fantastic links in this resource that will show you how to create a Mandala, how to divide your shape into concentric circles using a compass.
The YouTube videos included will show your students how to create some exciting Mandalas of their own.
This resource is designed to link mathematics, art and the theme of celebrations together in one neat activity.
Discuss with your students the definition of symmetry and find examples of it in the classroom, every day life and in historical mosaics and art pieces.
Concentric circles and geometry can be discussed within this activity, and students encouraged to use a compass to draw circles. This YouTube video may also be useful as a lead up activity or another lesson based on concentric circles
You will receive a 70 page PDF which includes 53 pages of images and 2 sheets of colored shapes that you can print of and laminate for use with mirrors to explore symmetry. Exciting stuff!!!!
Halloween Team Challenge
Have some fun this Halloween with a class group challenge. See who will be the first to solve all 6 problems. This could be used with Escape the Room, or Breakout style lessons. This resource is differentiated for easy, medium and harder levels of challenges for each stage. As each team works out a problem, they receive a part of the puzzle, or can have their progress marked off on the score sheet provided. If you wanted to add a bonus challenge at the end, offer the groups the puzzle as a seventh activity.
For durability, print the puzzle on cardstock and laminate.
A great 'go to activity' which will last you for many Halloweens to come.
You will receive a PDF with
Subitising is the instant recognition of patterns of shapes to be able to determine a number. There are many different ways in which we all see these patterns and they are a lively discussion topic for any primary grade class to determine how we interpret these displays of dots.
I encourage you to view this dot number talk by Jo Boaler in one of her many inspirational presentations https://vimeo.com/129139086 where she works through this concept with a middle primary group of students.
This download comes with both a PowerPoint presentation and a PDF version with 27 slides/pages (including credits and terms of use).
As the slides increase in difficulty the students transfer their knowledge from class discussions and can readily determine a quite complex display of dots on a page.
The graphics are engaging and visually inviting for students with some wonderful clipart from Manny's Sketchpad .
A useful addition to any Maths Teaching resource kit for primary school teaching.
What will you need?
•Each player needs a gameboard, some MAB blocks (ten units, and whatever the goal number of tens and hundreds are for each game)
•One dice for games up to fifty.
•You can introduce two dice to play the game of Mouse Trap 50 and 100 trade.
HOW TO PLAY
•The person who throws the highest number goes first (or has longest hair, next birthday
....paper, scissors, rock etc).
•The aim of the game is to be the first player to cover all of their ten blocks (or all of the blocks on their playmat….this is determined by group agreement of the rules)
•Roll the die or dice, and collect the corresponding number of blocks to be placed on the game board on any of the spaces shown that will fit the block shape.
•When ten unit (one) blocks have been collected, they can be ‘traded’ for a long (Ten’) and placed on a long shape on the board.
•When playing with two dice, encourage students to take the amount from the ‘bank’ tens and ones, and place them on the board. If the player has enough ones in their turn they can trade using ones on the board that may already be in play.
•In the hundreds game, the winner is the first to trade to 100.
You will receive 5 playing boards in both colour and black and white, playing rules and variations of the game.
This is a PDF file.
This handy poster comes in both color and print friendly formats. Encourage your students to explore all of the rules in the poster and investigate and prove the results to be true.
These are not designed to be learned by rote, but as a tool for investigation
This comprehensive kit comprises a set of iPad screen templates with room for writing algorithms underneath. Designed to be laminated for durability and a great addition to your math rotation groups.
Also included in this resource is
*Hundreds Chart
*Multiplication Chart
*Number lines to ten and twenty
*Ten Frames
*Algorithm Frames for recording results.
